Mitigating the Risk of a Presidential Tweet

Our Objective

A leading healthcare firm relocated and consolidated an unprofitable part of their pharmaceutical manufacturing, headquartering it in China at a time when President Trump was focusing on nearshoring. The President was quick to name and shame companies and their leadership on Twitter if displeased with their actions. Our goal was to inform and contextualize this move for legislators and the Administration as aligned with — not contradictory to — America’s new China policy.

Our Approach

Our experience has taught us that while expanding manufacturing in China is politically fraught for U.S. companies, these activities don’t always conflict with U.S. policy goals. Leveraging our network within the U.S. Administration and our monitoring of Capitol Hill, we identified key players whose early buy-in would be crucial in mitigating potential political fallout from our client’s relocation plans. We identified key stakeholders, developed customized communications frameworks for our client’s leadership and lobbying team that would resonate with the diverse range of influencers, sequencing the messages and engagements for maximum efficiency.

Our Impact

Neither the Administration nor the Hill issued a single Tweet about the move. Through strategic outreach and resonant messaging, we helped our client strengthen relationships with both the U.S. and Chinese governments and reinforce their overall commitment to constructive bilateral cooperation. Mission accomplished.
